Afilias supports all types of new TLDs, including dotBrands, dotCities, dotCommunities and dotGenerics with turnkey technical and value-added services.
What is a “pre-registration"?
Afilias uses the term “pre-registration” to mean your expression of interest in registering names in a particular new top-level domain. By checking a box or boxes, you are indicating an interest in eventually registering second level name(s) in that TLD when names actually become available.
What is a top-level domain?
A “top level domain” or TLD is the name at the right of the last dot in an Internet address. For example, in the name www.afilias.info, the “info” part is the top level domain. The “afilias” part is called a “second level domain”.
A “new” top level domain is one of the 1900 new TLDs that have been applied for by various applicants to ICANN (the organization that manages the Internet root). Afilias is one of the applicants, and Afilias has applied for the new TLDs offered for pre-registration at this site.
When will the new top-level domains actually be available?
Although no one one really knows, our belief is that some new top-level domains will be available by end of 2013. By pre-registering, however, you will have informed us of your interest and we’ll keep you updated on the status of the new top-level domain introduction process and especially the names you are interested in.
Why should I pre-register a new gTLD name?
Pre-registering a name puts you on a list of people to be kept up to date on the status of the TLDs you are interested in. This means that you will have all the relevant information to be fully ready to claim your name when the TLD opens to you.
Why should I pre-register new top-level domains now?
Pre-registering now ensures that any news pertaining to the TLDs you are interested in will come to you in a timely manner. Of course, you can wait, but if changes happen in ICANN’s timetable, you may miss important updates and then miss your opportunity to claim your name in the TLDs of your choice. Finally, there is no cost to you to pre-register, so why not?
How do I tell you the actual names I want to register in each TLD?
You don’t tell us for two reasons. First, you should closely guard the information about the specific names you want so as not to tip off “domain grabbers” who might try to swoop in on your name and then sell it to you later at a higher price. Second, we don’t need the specific name in order to keep you informed about that status of each TLD.
I want to pre-register a new gTLD that I expect to be “closed.” Is there a way to do that?
YES! Simply check the box and we’ll keep you up to date on that TLD. You should note that “closed” TLDs may have eligibility requirements that you cannot meet; if they do, you will not be able to register a name in that TLD regardless of your pre-registration. Many new TLDs have not yet published their eligibility requirements, so it is not possible at this time to determine whether you will qualify for a particular new TLD.
Do I need to pay now to pre-register a new gTLD name?
No, pre-registration is free. You are not required to submit your credit card or other payment information, you only need to provide a valid email address. Please note that we will send you information by email. If our email is not deliverable, we will be unable to maintain your pre-registration and hence not able to keep you up to date on TLD status.
Must I enter a binding contract by pre-registering a name?
No, at this time all pre-registrations are non-binding for you and us. Pre-registering with us enables us to keep you up to date on TLDs that you may be interested in.
Is pre-registering a name really free?
Yes, it's completely free. You don't need a credit card to pre-register but you do need to provide us with a valid email address.
What is the maximum number of names I may pre-register?
You may pre-register your interest in one or all of the TLDs listed. There is no limit.
What are the initial and yearly fees for these names?
Pricing information for new gTLDs is not yet available. When more information is released for new domains, you will be notified.
Is Afilias authorized to accept pre-registrations?
Afilias has applied to be the ICANN Designated Registry Operator for these TLDs and as such is fully authorized to accept your pre-registration interest.
Must I already own the same name in an existing TLD to qualify?
No. You may submit a pre-registration without already owning name(s) with any of the other top-level domains.
